Music Theory
This
class is offered to those students who are interested in a more
detailed study of the written components of music. Students will learn
the components of how music is constructed, developing both written and
aural skills. Elements such as melody, harmony, rhythm, and scale
structures will be studied.
Concert Band
Wind
players and percussionists are divided into 2 concert bands, one for
upperclassmen and the other for underclassmen. The concert bands
perform a variety of literature, including selections from the ISSMA
required lists. Soloists or small ensembles may also be featured. The
concert bands perform at the North District Festival and also for 2
major concerts in the spring. The groups also prepare music for the end
of the year commencement ceremonies. Students enrolled in concert band
receive one credit each semester of participation. Enrollment in
concert band is a prerequisite of any participation in Northern Lights,
North Jazz Ensemble, North Jazz Combo, IBA
All-Region/All-District/All-State, and EPYO. Students must be enrolled
to also participate in any ISSMA events such as Solo and Ensemble
Competitions
Concert Orchestra
The
North Orchestra, comprised of approximately 30 string players, performs
for a variety of concerts and events throughout the year. In the fall,
the group tours our feeder schools. In December, they perform at the
North District Instrumental Music Festival, combining with the Junior
High Orchestra, to form a massed string group. Each year, several
students are selected to the EVSC Honors Orchestra, which rehearses
through the winter and presents a concert in the spring. Solo and
Ensemble events occur in January at the district level and February at
the state level. Other opportunities include the Indiana All-State
Orchestra and EPYO. Select orchestra members begin preparation during
Second Semester for the Musical held in March. Select string players
are also chosen for the Northern Lights, North High School's unique
vocal jazz orchestra. The orchestra performs at two major concerts in
the North Performing Arts Center with the Concert Bands in the spring.
